C. Alexander’s
Fundamentals
RISD Museum exhibition and graphic design proposal | RISD Museum, Providence
Year: 2021
Area: 70yd2
Academic project completed during the Masters of Design in Interior Architecture program at RISD
Professor: Ernesto Aparicio
The project focuses on understanding Christopher Alexander’s “Nature of Order” and his 15 fundamental properties for design. Each of those design properties have been represented in a 2D visual way, with a graphic panel. The graphic design intention was based on an ethereal representation of the design properties, that stays in the abstract realm rather than representing them with photographs of how they appear in our day-to-day lives. This led to an exploration of 3D interpretations of the properties, and later a 2D poster design that appropriately explained each element along with a visualization of the object created. To elevate the exhibition further, the 3Dimensional elements that were used to represent each fundamental where displayed in front of the panels.
The exhibition and space was then designed to enhance the presence of the graphic elements and their relationship to the 3D representation by using clean and fresh display finishes and a soft textile/curtain for subtle spatial separation.
