Espai Formica is a collaborative project, led by the Madrid/New York based design practice musing-selles. The project was based on the idea that, due to small living spaces in big cities, we have a need for public/collective space that replicates the domestic interior. Unfortunately, in cities like Barcelona, collective space is highly capitalized as access to these types of spaces requires spending. The project provided citizens with a de-capitalized domestic collective space.

In order to allow for a space that settles within community, the project denotes a sense of belonging by establishing a relationship between space and collective identity, allowing the space to be appropriated by the users. The project recreates domestic spatial characteristics (in a non domestic context) and enhances social relationships, providing visitors with a sense of collective domesticity. Simultaneously, the project serves as promotion for Formica’s products displaying the product as a material that serves to create atmospheres and environments. The project also exhibits the products’ technical capabilities: how it bends, curves, supports weight and creates spaces.
